Quick answer

Is a coin flip really 50/50? An online coin flip is exactly 50/50. A real coin is very close, but a large 2023 study of over 350,000 flips found coins land the same way up as they started about 51% of the time.

A fair coin toss, every time

Press Flip for heads or tails. Each flip uses your browser's secure random number source, so heads and tails each have exactly a 50% chance and one flip has no effect on the next. You can also flip up to 100 coins at once and see the count, or keep flipping to watch the tally even out.

Is a real coin toss 50/50?

Almost, but not quite. A study published in 2023, in which researchers flipped coins more than 350,000 times, found that a coin lands the same way up as it started about 51% of the time. It's a tiny edge, but it means that if you can see which way up the coin starts, you could call that side and win slightly more often. An online flip doesn't have this problem.

Streaks happen more than you'd think

People are often surprised by long runs of heads or tails, but they're normal. The chance of a particular streak is ½ multiplied by itself for each flip:

Same side in a rowChance from a fresh start
21 in 4 (25%)
31 in 8 (12.5%)
51 in 32 (3.1%)
71 in 128 (0.8%)
101 in 1,024 (0.1%)

In 100 flips, you'd usually expect a streak of 6 or 7 somewhere. And after 5 heads in a row, the next flip is still exactly 50/50. Believing tails is "due" is known as the gambler's fallacy.

Dice odds

With one normal six-sided dice, each number has a 1 in 6 chance. With two dice, totals in the middle are much more likely than the extremes, because there are more ways to make them:

Total of 2 diceWays to roll itChance
2 or 1212.8%
3 or 1125.6%
4 or 1038.3%
5 or 9411.1%
6 or 8513.9%
7616.7%

The roller also does d4, d8, d10, d12, d20 and d100 for tabletop and role-playing games.

Frequently asked questions

Is the online coin flip fair?

Yes. Each flip uses a secure random number, so heads and tails each have exactly a 50% chance, and previous flips don't affect the next one.

Is a real coin flip 50/50?

Very nearly. A large 2023 study found coins land the same way up as they started about 51% of the time.

What are the odds of 5 heads in a row?

1 in 32, or about 3.1%. Each extra flip in a row halves the chance.

After lots of heads, is tails more likely?

No. Every flip is independent, so the chance is still 50/50. Thinking otherwise is called the gambler's fallacy.

What is the most likely total with two dice?

7. There are 6 ways to roll it out of 36, a 1 in 6 chance.
